February 20th, 2008 - frazzled and bedazzled — LiveJournal
As I got off the bus this evening I noticed something...odd...about the moon. It looked like both a crescent moon and a full moon at the same time.

I ran an errand with an eye on it every chance I got. I noticed the crescent shape was changing.

It wasn't until I was walking back to my car that I realized it was a lunar eclipse. Mesmerized, I stood in the parking lot while the moon slipped further and further into earth's shadow. Finally, I got in my car and rushed home so I could go back out and see it complete the journey into darkness.

While standing in the parking lot I marveled about the fact that no one else seemed to notice. How amazing it is that an event that would have seemed a portend of the future for millennia is so unremarkable today. We're so seemingly divorced from nature that instead of seeing a sign of the apocalypse, we see nothing at all.

And I don't know which of us - modern man or ancient - is the better now that there's no magic to believe in any more.
